Dentures (Removable Prostheses)
Dentures are removable prostheses for missing teeth: complete dentures for a toothless jaw, partials held by your own teeth, or dentures clipped to implants.
- Full, partial and implant-retained dentures
- Clasp, precision-attachment or telescopic design to suit your remaining teeth
- Wax try-in to check shade, tooth arrangement and speech
- Adjustment and relining appointments after fitting

Dentures, or removable prostheses, replace missing teeth and come out of the mouth for cleaning. A full denture is made when every tooth in a jaw is lost, a partial denture holds on to the teeth that remain, and an implant-retained denture, or overdenture, clips onto implants placed in the jaw. In a review of 26 articles, a lower denture on two implants scored higher than a conventional full denture for chewing performance and satisfaction (PubMed 28666845). Which type suits you depends on your remaining teeth, your jawbone and your general health.
- 01The three types of denture differ in how they are held: a full denture rests on the toothless jaw, a partial denture holds on to remaining teeth with clasps, precision attachments or telescopic crowns, and an overdenture clips onto implants.
- 02Supporting teeth that have had root canal treatment are lost more often under partial dentures: 13% against 4% for vital teeth in a meta-analysis of eight studies (PubMed 33117998).
- 03In 25 randomised trials of lower overdenture attachment systems, 2.0% of 2,154 implants and 4.2% of 737 dentures failed (PubMed 36115712).
- 04A full denture does not stop bone loss: in a review of 19 studies, ridge resorption in the back of the lower jaw did not differ significantly between full dentures and two-implant overdentures (PubMed 33281173).
- 05Sleeping with dentures is a measured risk: among 453 denture wearers aged 85 and over, those who wore them overnight had a hazard ratio of 2.38 for pneumonia (PubMed 25294364).
Full Dentures, Partial Dentures and Overdentures
Dentures, also called false teeth, are removable prostheses that replace missing teeth and that you take out yourself. The three main types differ in what holds them in place.
A full, or complete, denture is made when every tooth in one jaw has been lost; its pink base covers the palate or the toothless lower ridge and is held by saliva suction and muscle balance. A partial denture fills the gaps in a jaw that still has natural teeth and holds on to them with metal clasps, concealed attachments or telescopic crowns. The third type is the implant-retained denture, also called an overdenture or snap-in denture: it clips onto two or more implants in the jaw, and you still remove it for cleaning.
Losing all your teeth is not rare. A meta-analysis of 86 studies and 17 national oral health surveys of community-dwelling adults aged 45 and over put the pooled prevalence of edentulism at 22%, ranging from 1.1% to 70% between countries (PubMed 36265526).

Partial Dentures: Clasps, Precision Attachments and Telescopic Crowns
How long a partial denture serves you depends mostly on how it is held to your teeth and on the health of those supporting teeth. A cast partial denture has a thin cobalt-chromium framework that grips neighbouring teeth with metal clasps; an all-acrylic partial is usually a transitional option. In a precision-attachment partial the retaining part is hidden inside a crown on the supporting tooth, so that tooth needs a crown. In a telescopic, or double-crown, design an inner crown is cemented on the tooth and an outer crown inside the denture slides over it.
Drummond and colleagues pooled 46 studies and 4,072 patients: 95.1% of cast-clasp partial dentures and 91.7% of those retained by telescopic crowns were still in use at five years, and the two designs did not differ significantly (PubMed 39043477).
The strain falls on the supporting teeth. In a meta-analysis of eight studies, 13% of root-filled abutment teeth and 4% of vital abutment teeth under partial dentures were lost, and loss of vitality roughly tripled the risk (PubMed 33117998). A review of 42 publications by Moldovan and colleagues reported tooth loss of 0% to 18.1% with clasp-retained dentures and 5.5% to 29% with attachment-retained ones, and concluded that removable prostheses need intensive maintenance (PubMed 29959596). Problems in the supporting teeth are therefore treated before impressions. The types are covered in more depth in our article on partial denture types.
What an Implant-Retained Denture Changes
A lower full denture is harder to keep stable than an upper one, because the supporting area is smaller and bone loss is greater (PubMed 26836981); an implant-retained denture limits that movement with attachments. In a review by Kutkut and colleagues of 26 articles, 25 compared a lower denture on two unsplinted implants with a conventional full denture; the implant denture scored higher for chewing performance, satisfaction, comfort, stability and ease of speaking (PubMed 28666845).
The implants themselves mostly stay in place. Across 54 studies of implant prostheses in toothless jaws, estimated five-year implant survival was 97.9% in the upper jaw and 98.9% in the lower jaw, and implants carrying removable dentures had higher loss rates than those under fixed prostheses (PubMed 25664612). Comparing one implant with two, a meta-analysis of randomised trials found no difference in implant survival over five years, while denture fractures and remakes were more frequent with a single implant (PubMed 41003876).
Implant planning is explained on our dental implants page, and fixed and removable options are compared in our article on implant-supported prostheses.
Who Dentures Are Suitable For
Dentures are planned for people who have lost all or most of their teeth, whose bone volume or general health rules out implant surgery, or who prefer to avoid surgery. If some teeth are worth keeping, a partial denture is considered; if none remain, a full denture; and where bone and health allow, the plan can become an implant-retained denture.
A review of 18 articles using objective chewing tests found a clear advantage for a lower implant denture mainly in patients with a markedly resorbed lower jaw or those who could not adapt to a full denture (PubMed 18061741). On patient-reported outcomes, a meta-analysis of 28 studies covering 1,457 patients found strong improvement with both fixed and removable implant prostheses and no significant difference between them, although stability was rated higher with fixed ones (PubMed 37750530).
The decision weighs your remaining teeth, the bony ridge and oral hygiene. At our clinic in Bahçelievler, Istanbul, the appointment schedule for guests travelling from abroad is planned at the first examination.
Treatment Process
- 01Examination and Plan: Remaining teeth, gums and the bony ridge are examined, with X-rays where needed, and the denture type is chosen from these findings.
- 02Preparatory Treatment: Any extractions, fillings, root canal or gum treatment are completed before impressions.
- 03Impressions and Bite Record: Impressions are taken and the position of the jaws and the bite height are recorded.
- 04Wax Try-In: The teeth are set in wax so shade, tooth length, lip support and speech can be checked.
- 05Fitting and Adjustment: The denture is fitted, and pressure spots are relieved at adjustment visits in the first weeks.
From Impressions to Fitting
Treatment starts with an examination of the remaining teeth, gums and bony ridge, with X-rays where needed, and any extractions, fillings or root canal treatment are finished before impressions.
Impressions are then taken and the bite height, the position of the two jaws relative to each other, is recorded. At the wax try-in the teeth are set in wax so that shade, tooth length, lip support and speech can be checked, and the final denture is made only after you approve it. In the first weeks after fitting, spots where the denture presses on the gum are relieved at adjustment visits.
Manufacturing has been studied too. A review of six clinical studies found that complete dentures designed and made digitally (CAD-CAM) had better retention and needed fewer appointments than conventional ones, with similar patient satisfaction (PubMed 38666691). An immediate denture, fitted on the day teeth are removed, is another option; as the extraction sites heal the ridge shrinks, so it loosens and needs relining, and the definitive denture is made once the tissues have settled.
Getting Used to Dentures, Cleaning and Night-Time Wear
Extra saliva, difficulty with some sounds and the denture shifting while you eat are common at first; a sore spot that does not settle needs an adjustment.
Dentures are taken out and cleaned every day. A systematic review of 44 clinical studies on denture hygiene found that combining a chemical cleanser with brushing was significantly more effective than either alone (PubMed 34922732).
In an observational study that followed 524 people aged 85 and over for three years, 186 of the 453 denture wearers slept with their dentures in, and their risk of pneumonia was higher than in those who removed them, with a hazard ratio of 2.38 (PubMed 25294364). The finding comes from a very elderly group, but it explains why dentures are taken out and cleaned overnight.
Denture adhesive can add grip to a well-fitting denture: in a meta-analysis of 39 studies it improved the retention, bite force and chewing performance of complete dentures (PubMed 33727079). Needing more and more adhesive usually means the fit has changed, as covered in our article on loose dentures and adhesive.
Bone Loss, Relining and Replacing a Denture
After teeth are lost the jawbone keeps shrinking, and a full denture does not stop this. In a review of 19 studies by Pham and colleagues, ridge resorption in the back of the lower jaw did not differ significantly between full dentures and two-implant overdentures, while four-implant overdentures reduced it compared with two-implant ones; relining frequency and base material were linked to the rate of resorption (PubMed 33281173).
In a review of 18 studies covering 496 patients, a lower implant-retained denture did not increase resorption in the upper jaw compared with a full denture, and resilient attachments such as balls and O-rings were associated with less resorption than rigid bars and telescopic crowns; the certainty of evidence was low to moderate (PubMed 42462133).
As bone shrinks, a gap opens under the denture and it loosens; relining refits its inner surface to the tissue. The largest data on replacement comes from a records study of 187,227 Australian adults given complete dentures in public clinics: over 20 years, 27.7% of the dentures were replaced, the average service life was 6.06 years, and more than 70% of the adults never replaced theirs (PubMed 34645719). Soft liners improved satisfaction and chewing in a systematic review, but lasted for a shorter time than hard relines and were more prone to microbial contamination (PubMed 38382972). The bone side of the topic is explored in our article on how dentures affect the jawbone.

Frequently asked
01Do I need full dentures or partial dentures?+
It depends on whether any teeth worth keeping remain. A full denture replaces every tooth in a jaw; a partial denture fills the gaps and holds on to your own teeth, so their health matters. In a meta-analysis of eight studies, 13% of root-filled supporting teeth and 4% of vital ones were lost under partial dentures (PubMed 33117998). The examination decides which teeth can be kept.
02How much do dentures cost in Turkey?+
On the 2026 price list at Mosdent, an acrylic complete denture starts from €550 per arch and one with a metal base from €650. Partial dentures start from €510 per arch in acrylic and €620 with a cast metal framework; a precision-attachment partial starts from €620 per arch, with the attachments charged separately. An implant-retained denture starts from €440 per arch, with implants and attachments priced separately. These are starting prices, not quotes; the figure for your case is set after the examination.
03What is a cast metal partial denture?+
A cast metal partial denture has a thin cobalt-chromium framework that carries the replacement teeth and grips neighbouring teeth with metal clasps; it is thinner and more rigid than an all-acrylic partial. Pooling 46 studies, Drummond and colleagues found 95.1% of cast-clasp partials still in use at five years, against 91.7% of those retained by telescopic crowns (PubMed 39043477).
04Can I get snap-in dentures on implants in Istanbul?+
Yes. At our clinic in Bahçelievler, Istanbul, implant-retained dentures that clip onto two or more implants are planned after the examination and a scan of the jawbone. In 25 randomised trials comparing attachment systems for lower overdentures, 2.0% of 2,154 implants and 4.2% of 737 dentures failed (PubMed 36115712). Implant surgery and fitting the denture are separate stages, so the trip is planned around both.
05Do dentures look like real teeth?+
The tooth shade, shape and length are chosen with you and checked at the wax try-in before the final denture is made, so the result is judged in your own mouth first. In a meta-analysis of partial denture wearers, oral health-related quality of life improved 3 months after fitting (mean difference -12.0 on the OHIP-14 scale, 222 participants), with very low certainty of evidence (PubMed 36280004).
06Should you take dentures out at night?+
Taking dentures out at night and cleaning them is the usual advice, and there is data behind it. In an observational study of 453 denture wearers aged 85 and over, those who slept with their dentures in had a higher risk of pneumonia, with a hazard ratio of 2.38 (PubMed 25294364). A review of 44 studies found that combining a chemical cleanser with brushing cleaned dentures better than either alone (PubMed 34922732).
07How many visits do dentures take in Istanbul?+
A conventional denture is made in stages: examination, impressions, bite record, wax try-in and fitting, followed by adjustment visits, so the schedule is planned at the first examination. In a review of six clinical studies, dentures designed and made digitally (CAD-CAM) needed fewer appointments and had better retention than conventional dentures, with similar satisfaction (PubMed 38666691).
