
Genetic Factors in Gum Disease and Common Gum Problems: Bleeding, Recession, Discoloration, and Their Causes
Genetics explain more than people expect, and less than they fear: in a twin study of 117 adult pairs, about 50% of the variance in adult periodontitis was genetic, and the estimate held after adjusting for behaviour. The same analysis found no heritable component for gingivitis, which is the reversible stage.
